Va. House Democrats walk out of pastor’s opening prayer

Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates staged a walkout Feb. 11 to protest a Republican-invited pastor’s attacks on same-sex marriage and abortion.

State Del. Michael Webert (R-Fauquier County) invited Rev. Robert Grant, Jr., a senior pastor at The Father’s Way church in Warrenton, to deliver the opening prayer before lawmakers recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Va. House approves bill to repeal same-sex marriage ban

The Virginia House of Delegates on Jan. 28 voted 63-34 to repeal the state’s statutory same-sex marriage ban.

House Bill 1490, introduced by state Del. Nancy Guy (D-Virginia Beach), would officially repeal Virginia’s prohibition the U.S. Supreme Court deemed unconstitutional in its 2015 ruling in the Obergefell case.

Va. House approves pro-LGBT surrogacy bill

The Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill on Feb. 20 to make the state’s surrogacy laws gender-neutral.

Introduced by state Del. Richard Sullivan (D-Fairfax County), the bill, House Bill 1979, removes the terms “husband and “wife” from the laws. The measure also permits someone who is not married to be “an intended parent.”
