The LGBTQ community celebrated a milestone in 2019, the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. It was an uprising born of exhaustion and fury over the NYPD’s incessant raids on the LGBTQ bar.

Almost nightly, officers harassed and arrested Stonewall Inn patrons simply for gathering at the Greenwich Village locale. Until June 28, 1969. That’s when LGBTQ patrons stood up and fought back, led by two transgender women of color: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.

J.K. Rowling sparks backlash after tweeting support for British woman fired for transphobic comments

J.K. Rowling, author of the massively popular Harry Potter series, sparked intimidate backlash after tweeting support for Maya Forstater, a researcher on business and international development who was fired from The Center for Global Development (CGD) in London after comments that were seen as transphobic.

“Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill,” Rowling tweeted Dec. 19.

NYPD investigating defaced Megan Rapinoe posters as possible hate crime

The New York Police Department is investigating vandalism of Megan Rapinoe World Cup posters as a possible hate crime.

CNN reports that eight posters featuring Rapinoe in her U.S. Women’s National Team jersey were discovered on Monday to be vandalized at the Bryant Park subway station in New York City. The vandalized posters had “homophobic and defamatory slurs along with the phrase ‘Screw this ho.’” One poster also called Rapinoe a “shemale.”

UK sees 81 percent rise in transphobic hate crimes

Hate crimes against transgender people in England, Scotland and Wales have risen 81%, the BBC reported last week.

The news service obtained the data from 36 out of 44 police departments throughout Great Britain. The data showed an increase to 1,944 reported hate crimes based on gender identity compared to 1,073 in 2016-2017.

Real Housewife Lisa Vanderpump apologizes for transphobic joke about Erica Jayne

“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Lisa Vanderpump has apologized for making a transphobic joke about castmate Erika Jayne.

The episode, which aired on May 21, included a storyline where Vanderpump, 58, takes a lie detector test. Vanderpump has been battling with her co-stars this season over a dog adopted by her ex-friend Dorit Kemsley from her rescue center, Vanderpump Dogs. After the dog bit Kemsley’s child and husband, Kemsley dropped the dog off at a shelter. Kemsley and Kyle Richards have accused Vanderpump of leaking the story to the press.

Halsey slams Victoria’s Secret for transphobic comments

Halsey performed at the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which aired on Dec. 2, but the 24-year-old singer followed up her performance by criticizing the brand’s transphobic controversy in an Instagram post.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was filmed in November in New York City. Ed Razek, chief marketing officer for Victoria’s Secret’s parent company L Brands, made some controversial comments about diversity among the underwear label’s models in a November interview with Vogue.

We live in an age where it can be easy to forget your pride. The White House certainly does. Even with orange prominently displayed in our flag, the current administration declined to issue a proclamation acknowledging LGBTQ Americans for the second year in a row.

The Pentagon followed suit, opting for the first time since the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to not formally acknowledge LGBTQ Pride Month. It was a bold reflection of the administration’s ever-looming transphobic military policies.

UK promises to prosecute online hate crimes vigorously

LONDON (AP) – British authorities are promising to prosecute hate crimes committed online as vigorously as those that take place face-to-face, recognizing the growth of hate speech on social media and the potential for such crimes to affect large numbers of people.

New guidelines issued Aug. 21 outline a tough stance on cyber hate attacks on the basis of race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity. In addition, the guidance for the first time recognizes hate crimes against bisexuals as distinct from homophobic or transphobic attacks.

‘Big Brother 19’ houseguests spark backlash with transphobic conversation

“Big Brother 19” contestants Jason Dent and Cody Nickson sparked a fan debate after they made transphobic comments captured on Sunday’s live feeds.

Dent and Nickson were in the hot tub with fellow contestants Jessica Graf and Matt Clines discussing season 17 of “Big Brother.” Graf mentions Audrey Middleton, the first transgender contestant in the show’s history, causing Dent to become confused about what that means.

Comedian Lil Duval defends transphobic remarks, refuses to apologize
