Idaho governor quietly signs anti-trans bills amid coronavirus crisis

As the nation’s focus has become fixated on the coronavirus, Idaho Gov. Brad Little has signed into law Monday on the eve of the Transgender Day of Visibility two pieces of anti-trans legislation.

One measure, House Bill 500, is aimed at restricting transgender youth’s participation in sports. The other measure, House Bill 509, is aimed at banning transgender people from changing the gender marker on the their birth certificate.

Justin Trudeau calls for conversion therapy ban in Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a ban on so-called conversion therapy in his country.

Trudeau, in a letter sent to Attorney General David Lametti on Dec. 13, directed Lametti to work with Diversity, Inclusion and Youth Minister Bardish Chagger “to amend” Canada’s Criminal Code “to ban the practice of conversion therapy and take other steps required with the provinces and territories to end conversion therapy in Canada.”

Facebook pressed to drop ads claiming PrEP is unsafe

More than 50 LGBTQ, AIDS and public health organizations released a joint letter on Monday addressed to Facebook Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg urging him to immediately remove “dangerous and misleading” ads currently running on Facebook and Instagram suggesting the HIV prevention drug PrEP is unsafe.

“As organizations attached to this letter – leaders in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) advocacy, public health, and HIV/AIDS prevention – we are urgently reaching out to Facebook and Instagram regarding factually inaccurate advertisements which suggest negative health effects of Truvada PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis),” the letter states.

Pasco Pride, advocates show support for LGBTQ youth

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. | More than 100 LGBTQ advocates and allies attended a Pasco County School Board meeting in support of LGBTQ youth on Dec. 3.

The effort was organized by Pasco Pride cultural liaison Myndee Washington. Supporters wore purple to show solidarity with bullied LGBTQ youth and Pasco County Schools’ use of a best practices guide designed to assist educators in better understanding LGBTQ students.

Over 50 Central Florida entertainers will come together to perform comedy and music from some of Broadway’s most famous shows. The event is hosted by Kai’ja Adonis and Jose Marrero.

1 in 5 LGBTQ youth identify as other than gay, lesbian or bisexual

More than 1 in 5 LGBTQ youth in the United States identify as a sexual orientation other than gay, lesbian or bisexual, according to a survey unveiled by The Trevor Project Oct. 1.

The survey, which was conducted last year, reveals a large minority of LGBTQ youth identify use terms like “queer, trisexual, omnisexual or pansexual” to describe their sexual orientation.

Florida leads nation, introduces bill to end conversion therapy in 2019 legislative session

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Florida became the first state nationwide to introduce legislation to end conversion therapy in the 2019 legislative session Nov. 21.

State Senator Jose Javier Rodriguez, a Democrat who represents Florida’s 37th district in Miami-Dade, introduced Senate Bill 84 (SB 84) to protect LGBTQ youth from the discredited practice.  Conversion therapy purports to change a child’s sexual orientation and gender identity using “psychological or spiritual intervention.” It is widely opposed by prominent health associations including the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
