Australians’ support of gay marriage weakens in new poll

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Support for legalizing gay marriage in Australia has weakened just as a national postal ballot asks voters where they stand on the contentious issue, according to a new opinion poll.

The government said Monday it has sent ballots to all of Australia’s more than 16 million voters asking whether the nation should lift its prohibition on same-sex marriage. Results of the balloting that began Sept. 12 will be announced Nov. 15.

Australian prime minister rules out attending Sydney Gay Mardi Gras

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – Australia’s prime minister said Thursday that he won’t attend this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras following a furor over his change of stance on same-sex marriage.

Malcolm Turnbull last year became Australia’s first serving prime minister to attend the annual street parade that is staged in his wealthy electoral division, angering the more conservative elements of his ruling party.

Mr. Sulu in the new ‘Star Trek’ film revealed to be gay

The latest sequel to J.J. Abram’s Star Trek reboot is set to hit theaters at the end of this month, and as the cast members are making there rounds on the talk show circuit, plot points are being revealed, namely that Mr. Sulu is gay.

John Cho, who plays the U.S.S. Enterprise’s pilot Mr. Sulu, visited Sydney to promote Star Trek Beyond along with fellow cast mates Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) and director Justin Lin.

Australia’s high court re-bans marriage equality

Sydney (AP) – Australia’s highest court struck down a landmark law that had begun allowing the country’s first gay marriages, shattering the dreams of more than two dozen same-sex newlyweds whose marriages will now be annulled less than a week after their weddings.

The federal government had challenged the validity of the Australian Capital Territory’s law that had allowed gay marriages in the nation’s capital and its surrounding area starting last Saturday. The court re-banned marriage equality Dec. 12.
