PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) | A Portland, Oregon, man has been charged with bias crimes after an attack on a transgender woman in the city’s Pearl District.

KOIN reports that the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said the victim and her friend were waiting in line for coffee and food on Sunday.

Decades later, Maine gay bar replaces windows smashed by bigots

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) | A gay bar in Maine’s largest city has put up new front windows after 28 years of covering its smashed glass with plywood in the wake of homophobic vandalism.

Blackstones, in Portland’s West End, opened in the 1980s, long before the city gained a widespread reputation as a gay-friendly city. Vandals repeatedly smashed the front windows with rocks and bricks, and the bar’s owners boarded the windows with plywood and plexiglass in 1991.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) | A 47-year-old man has been convicted of the hate crime of second-degree intimidation for threatening to kill a gay man in southwest Portland.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Scott Wayne Smith changed his plea on April 2 to no contest as his trial was scheduled to start.

Venezuelan legally in Portland faces deportation

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Venezuelan man who is HIV positive and is in the U.S. legally was arrested in Portland in a pre-dawn raid because of a methamphetamine possession conviction, his immigration lawyer and a rights group said on Monday.

Luis Garcia, a nurse at a hospice center in Portland, now faces deportation to a country that is in an economic crisis, and where medicine is scarce.

School revokes job offer after learning woman is gay

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Catholic school in downtown Portland has rescinded its job offer for a college counseling position after learning that the candidate is gay.

The Oregonian reports 27-year-old Lauren Brown says St. Mary’s Academy withdrew its offer in late July after she told an administrator about her sexual orientation.
