NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar nods for women and minorities drew many of the headlines in Tuesday’s nominations, but this year’s Academy Awards also mark a breakthrough for transgender filmmakers.

Oscar push for transgender actresses of “Tangerine”

For the first time in the 88 years the Academy has handed out Oscars, a movie distributor is pushing for nominations for transgender actresses.

Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor star in Tangerine, a Sundance hit about two transgender prostitutes on a Christmas Eve adventure through Los Angeles. The campaign, from Duplass Brothers Production who produced the film and Magnolia Pictures who distributed it, will push for Rodriguez for Best Actress and Taylor for Best Supporting Actress.
