Trial set for man accused of hitting a gay couple for kissing

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A former Marshall University running back will face trial on Jan. 26 on charges of hitting a gay couple.

The Herald-Dispatch reports a Cabell County circuit judge set the tentative trial date during a status conference Tuesday for 24-year-old Steward Butler of Lakeland, Florida.

Marshall University Football Player Charged With Assaulting Gay Couple

A college football player has been dismissed from the team and charged by police after attacking a gay couple because he saw them kiss.

Steward Butler, a running back with Marshall University’s football team, is accused of assaulting Casey Williams, 20, and Zackery Johnson, 21, in Huntington, West Virginia after seeing the couple exchange a kiss while they walked back to their hotel room from a local club.
