ORLANDO | Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Orlando City Council recognized October as LGBTQ+ History Month in the City of Orlando at City Hall Oct. 21.

“Orlando is a city for everyone! This is one of the many ways we continue to build a community that values equality and inclusion,” said Felipe Sousa Matos Rodriguez, the City of Orlando’s  Inclusion, Diversity & Equity Senior Specialist for the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

UCF kicks off LGBTQ History Month with PrideFest

ORLANDO | The University of Central Florida held PrideFest at the Student Union on campus Oct. 2 to celebrate LGBTQ History Month with its students and educate them on local LGBTQ organizations.

Decorated with Pride flags and rainbow lights, PrideFest was the opening ceremony for a series of events at the university throughout LGBTQ History Month.

During the life of this issue, Mother Nature will officially unleash fall. Some of us mark the start of fall with the return of pumpkin spice everything. For others it’s designated by cooler temperatures, orange and brown decor or new episodes of their favorite stories. For me fall brings with it a special anniversary of sorts: sobriety.

Oct. 1 will mark four years since I stopped drinking. Fitting in a way, as Oct. 1 also launches LGBTQ history month. I am a history fan, always have been. Perhaps that’s why I find my career path so fascinating. At Watermark we share stories, mark truths and archive them so we can look back to see whether we improve; whether we learn from where we came from. I often say we need our past to understand our future. That is true as a community and as an individual.

Come Out With Pride to keep Orlando dancing with this year’s parade, festival

ORLANDO | Come Out With Pride (COWP) is gearing up for its most colorful day of the year — its 14th annual Pride festival and parade held on Oct. 13.

Aligning with National Coming Out Day and LGBTQ History Month, COWP is one of the largest Pride events in Florida with over 160,000 attendees last year. COWP President Jeff Prystajko says there will likely be even more this year.

UCF opens LGBTQ History Month with Todrick Hall

The atmosphere was that of excitement in the Cape Florida Ballroom at the University of Central Florida Oct. 4 for the university’s LGBTQ History Month opening ceremony.

Art displayed around the room emphasized UCF’s LGBTQ History Month theme, “Maintained the Pulse,” meant to honor the victims of the Pulse shooting. The art was provided by Hidden Artists and Sean Wiggins, and focused on the LGBTQ community and Wiggins’ One Love Project.
