Four LGBTQ Central Florida and Tampa Bay chefs on finding their tribe in the restaurant life

The idiom “love is love” became a rallying cry throughout the LGBTQ community since the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in 2015. But for these four gay and lesbian chefs in Orlando, Tampa and St. Petersburg, food is love.

Most of them grew up cooking at the feet of their families. Jeannie Pierola, chef and owner of the Edison Food + Drink Lab in Tampa, learned from her Spanish and Cuban grandmothers. Top Chef Seattle alum and executive chef at St. Pete boîtes BellaBrava and Stillwaters Tavern, Jeffrey Jew, learned from his father and half-Chinese grandfather.

Tampa Bay celebrates Watermark’s 2017 WAVE Awards at Flamingo Resort

Watermark celebrated with the Tampa Bay winners of the 2017 WAVE Awards at the Flamingo Resort in St. Petersburg March 9.

The Flamingo Resort hosted the event in their new Blu Room Theatre with flowers designed by The Flower Centre of St. Petersburg. First place winners took home awards in beautiful frames courtesy of Tyrone’s Frame and Mirror.

2017 WAVE Awards Spotlight: Jeffrey Jew

Virginia native and renowned chef Jeffrey Jew has taken over Tampa Bay with his immense culinary skills and food industry knowledge, winning him a 2017 Wave Award for Favorite Local LGBTQ (Friendly) Chef Or Caterer.

“It’s quite an honor considering the history of the award and all the other nominees,” Jew said. “It feels amazing!”
