Federal court considers bathroom use by transgender student

ATLANTA (AP) | A student has the right to use the bathroom that corresponds to his gender identity, a lawyer told a federal court Thursday, arguing that the issue is about the right of transgender students to “equal dignity.”

But the Florida school district that’s appealing a lower court order in favor of the transgender boy told three judges on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that they should overturn the ruling and let the school district restrict students to the bathroom matching their at-birth sex to protect the privacy of other students.

The Dru Project awards 2019 LGBTQ youth scholarships

ORLANDO | The Dru Project announced the five recipients of the 2019 Spirit of Drew Scholarship ahead of the organization’s third year anniversary, which will be on June 14.

Drew Adams, who will attend the University of Central Florida; Emily Silverio-Williams, who will attend Florida International University; Dean Rooney, who will attend Florida State University; Evan Malzberg, who will attend Columbia University; and Dalton Vanderford, who will attend the University of South Florida, will each receive $5,000 toward their education.

Transgender student in Florida can now use men’s restroom

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) | A federal judge says a transgender student at a Florida high school can use the men’s restroom during his senior year.

The judge ruled last Thursday that 18-year-old Drew Adams can use the men’s restroom at Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida when classes resume next month.

Mother of Florida transgender boy sues over bathroom access at school

ST. AUGUSTINE – The mother of a 16-year-old transgender boy who is being denied access to the boys’ restroom at his high school is suing the School Board.

The boy, identified as Drew Adams in the complaint filed in U.S. District Court, was born a girl but has identified as a boy and began to transition in the summer of 2015. That fall Adams began attending Nease High School in Ponte Vedra.
