On Grammy red carpet, stars speak out against anti-LGBTQ legislation

The tragic death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash, alongside his 13-year-old daughter and 7 other people, cast a somber mood over Sunday night’s 62nd Grammy Awards ceremony. A breathtaking opening number by host and multiple Grammy-winner Alicia Keys and members of Boys II Men paid tribute to the basketball superstar, setting the stage for an evening which was peppered with speeches and performances dedicated to Bryant’s memory.

The passing of Bryant was not the only shadow hanging over the evening, however. With this week’s news of the signing into law by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee of his state’s controversial measure allowing adoption agencies to deny service to same-sex couples on the basis of “religious freedom,” the resurgent specter of anti-LGBTQ discrimination also haunted the proceedings, made all the more glaring by a lack of any mention in a presentation that included several wins by out LGBTQ artists.

Wedding Bells: Amber Kuzma and Shelby Kucharski

“I met her on Facebook in a group for lesbians,” Amber Kuzma says about how she met her wife, Shelby Kucharski. “I wasn’t looking for anything as I had recently gotten out of a pretty nasty divorce. However, I had moved from Florida—where there were tons of out people—to Michigan, where I was the token lesbian again.”

The two struck up a conversation about Kucharski’s work as an off-leash dog trainer and that was the beginning.

Demi Lovato hospitalized after possible drug overdose

Demi Lovato has been hospitalized July 24 after a possible drug overdose.

TMZ, which broke the story, reports that paramedics found Lovato, 25, unconscious at her home in the Hollywood Hills. She was then taken to an L.A. hospital. Lovato is being treated, and is now “stable,” according to PEOPLE.

Demi Lovato’s GLAAD fundraiser raises thousands of dollars in hours

Demi Lovato started a Facebook fundraiser to raise money for GLAAD and within a few hours the fundraiser had reached beyond its targeted goal.

“I’m celebrating Pride by raising money for GLAAD, an organization that has been fighting for LGBTQ+ inclusion and justice since 1985,” Lovato posted on Twitter.

Britney Spears was honored with the Vanguard Award at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday but her appearance caused a stir.

Spears, who attended the ceremony with her boyfriend Sam Asghari, was recognized for promoting LGBTQ acceptance and equality. Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Antonio Banderas and Demi Lovato are among the award’s past recipients.

Tampa Bay’s Overheard: Tell them you love them

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay took the Amalie Arena by storm on March 31 when they joined Demi Lovato on stage for the final performance of her 20-city nationwide tour.

“No joke—this was us last night on stage,” the group shared on social media afterwards, posting video of their performance with the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum popstar. “It was such an honor for [the] Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay to back up singer and LGBT ally Demi Lovato in concert!”
