Baltimore area healthcare clinic employees opt for union

BALTIMORE (AP) – A Baltimore health clinic has voted for unionizing after five supervisors were fired amid efforts on behalf of the staff to organize.

Chase Brexton Health Care employees cast their ballots Aug. 25. The clinic caters primarily to poor populations without insurance, many of whom are HIV positive and members of the LGBT community.

Two weeks before the vote five supervisors, including a nurse practitioner who had worked at the clinic for nine years, were abruptly fired as Chase Brexton employees were beginning the process of organizing a union.

Union representative Brian Owens said the union filed a complaint against the clinic with the National Labor Relations Board. The clinic has also filed a complaint with the board, against the union.
