Openly gay veteran to temporarily fill Virginia city’s council seat

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – The city council of Norfolk will welcome its first openly gay council member at its regularly scheduled meeting July 19.

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reports that 46-year-old Nicole Carry is also believed to be the council’s first Navy veteran in recent history.

The assignment will be temporary. Carry replaces a member who had to resign because he ran for mayor, unsuccessfully, earlier this year.

Carry will serve for less than two months before a special election allows voters to choose a permanent member. She has no plans to run for the seat.

Council members picked Carry from a pool of seven candidates. She’s an information-technology consultant who’s lived in Norfolk for more than 20 years. She served in the Navy during the 1990s.
