Stonewall Reception kicks off a week of Pride in St. Pete

St. Pete Pride officially got started with the Stonewall Reception at the Museum of Fine Art in St. Petersburg on June 22.

The event was a who’s who of Tampa Bay figures including St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman, Largo commissioner Michael Smith, Florida House hopeful Jennifer Webb and former state Governor (and next Congressman?) Charlie Crist.

St. Pete Pride executive director Eric Skains took the stage after showing the #WeAreOrlando memorial video created and originally played at the Tampa Bay Rays Pride Night.

Skains spoke about the importance of gay bars in our community and the need to celebrate Pride. Skains invited Mayor Kriseman to the stage to say a few words.

“We’re not gonna let the bastards beat us. We will be taking extraordinary measures to make sure you’re safe [at Pride]. We want you to remember and celebrate. We celebrate our differences. We are a city of opportunity where the sun shines on ALL,” Kriseman says.
