Meet the first openly transgender White House staffer

History in the making! President Obama appointed Raffi Freedman-Gurspan as the White House LGBT liaison, making her the first transgender person to fulfill that role.

Freedman-Gusrpan is a long-time advocate who has been Outreach and Recruitment Director for Presidential Personnel in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel since August of 2015. Here are five things to know about her:

  1. Freedman-Gusrpan was born in Hondoras but adopted by an American Jewish couple and raised in Massachusetts.
  2. When she was a teenager, she was obsessed with Scandinavian culture and attended a Norwegian language summer camp.
  3. Her first job as a LGBT liaison was for the mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts.
  4. She was the first openly transgender legislative staffer in the Massachusetts State House and the first transgender White House staffer.
  5. She was born in 1987, so she’s accomplished all this in less than three decades!
