Bigots may no longer express their hate in 140 characters or less.

On Dec. 30, Twitter announced they’ve updated their rules to ban abusive behavior and hateful conduct. The new rules explicitly mention that sexual identity and gender expression are protected:

“You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories.”

Twitter’s announcement of the update notes that the new rules don’t restrict expression, but encourage it.

“We believe that protection from abuse and harassment is a vital part of empowering people to freely express themselves on Twitter,” the announcement states.
