NFL owner takes back $10,000 donation against LGBT rights law

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Houston Texans owner Bob McNair is rescinding a $10,000 donation to opponents of a city nondiscrimination ordinance that expands gay rights because he says the campaign made “unauthorized statements” about his beliefs.

McNair on Oct. 23 asked the Campaign for Houston to return his money before the Nov. 3 vote. He’s a major Republican donor whose benefactors include top conservatives hoping to repeal the 2014 measure.

The ordinance extends nondiscrimination protections to gay and transgender residents.

In a statement, McNair said he had “great dismay” over comments the group made about his opposition but did not elaborate. McNair says he doesn’t tolerate discrimination.

A Campaign for Houston spokesman says he doesn’t know what the NFL owner is referencing but says the donation would be returned.

Houston hosts the 2017 Super Bowl.
