University of North Dakota plans own hate crime investigation after police say story was fabricated

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota plans its own investigation into an incident in which authorities say a reported hate crime on campus turned out to be a fabricated story.

Police investigators last week said a gay man who reported being the victim of homophobic taunting and an assault at a fraternity made up the story and actually instigated the fight. Police recommended charges against 18-year-old Haakon Gisvold but prosecutors declined, saying a conviction would be unlikely.

KFGO radio reports that UND says it will look into whether there were any violations of federal discrimination law or the student code of conduct.

Gisvold has not responded to several Associated Press requests for comment.
