Sarasota baker will not use his religion against same-sex couples

Since marriage equality started to become law, first state-by-state and then nationwide this past June, some in the conservative, Christian community have declared a war on same-sex weddings using the excuse that it infringes on their religious freedom.

Kim Davis used the excuse to not issue marriage licenses to any couples in Rowan County, Kentucky and many Christian bakers across the country refused to bake wedding cakes for same-sex couples saying that a part of them would be participating in the ceremony.

This form of discrimination makes no sense to Sarasota baker Ron Zammit.

Zammit is a Christian who believes in marriage between one man and one woman, what is commonly referred to as “traditional marriage,” but says that is not a reason to deny services to a same-sex couple.

“I don’t believe that I should judge them for being gay as well as judging someone for being a certain religion. That’s not for me to do,” Zammit, who is the owner of Cakes by Ron, said to WWSB 7 News.

“It doesn’t bother me one bit or another,” Zammit said. “It’s a wedding cake, and if they feel like they love each other and want to get married, more power to them.”

Zammit has been baking wedding cakes for Sarasota for the last 27 years and estimates that he has served between 20 and 30 same-sex couples since marriage became legal in January.

“As Christians, I think that we should be kind-hearted and show the love of God to people, not to be judging what they’re doing,” Zammit said.
