Drag performer murder trial underway

A jury is hearing arguments in the trial of Deandre Tolliver, accused of murdering a well-known Hamburger Mary’s Drag performer.

Anthony Jerome Lee performed under the name of Wanda.

On May 28, 2013, Tolliver knocked on the door of an Ybor House. Lee answered the door and was shot and killed. Police say Lee wasn’t the target, and Tolliver was looking for a woman.

Tolliver is charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a firearm and armed burglary of a dwelling with assault.

The trial is underway before Judge Kimberly Fernandez in the Thirteenth Judicial Court of Hillsborough County.

Julie Holt, Hillsborough public defender, said the trial will be in session most of the week of July 13-17.

Earlier this week, defense attorneys asked that the jury not be told that Lee was a drag performer, out of concern that the information would prejudice jurors.
