Polk County brings huge Pride with small town charm

Lakeland, Fla. – PFLAG of Polk County and the Lakeland Youth Alliance came together to bring a Pride event like never seen before in Polk County June 19-21.

The Lakeland area has had a Polk County Pride in the past, but this was the first year the two organizations came together to bring an event of this size to the LGBT community.

The celebration kicked off June 19 with the comedic styling of Leslie Jordan, best known for his outlandish characters in the TV shows Will & Grace, Boston Legal and American Horror Story: Coven.

The main event was the Pride Festival in Munn Park June 20. The people braved the intense heat and afternoon thunderstorms to roam the vendors, listen to the live music and celebrate their pride with family, friends and neighbors.

During the festival, Polk Pride presented Equality Florida’s Nadine Smith with the Rainbow Swan Award. Later Smith led Pride Talks, an LGBT Speaker Forum held in Frescos Downstairs.

The party exploded with Pride After Dark at Club Main Street. The after party had drinks, dancing and an under the sea themed drag show hosted by Kathryn Nevets.

The festivities concluded at Westminster Presbyterian Church for Pride in Faith June 21.
