WNBA player Brittney Griner announces annulment from pregnant wife

WNBA player Brittney Griner filed for an annulment from wife and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson June 5,  just 28 days after their wedding and one day after Johnson announced her pregnancy, according to Buzzfeed News.

The two women got married on May 8, three weeks after they were both arrested in Arizona for domestic violence charges. According to ESPN, Griner plead guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct, and will enter a domestic violence diversion program as condition of her plea, and Johnson plead not guilty.

Following that, both Griner and Johnson were suspended without pay from WNBA for seven games each, the WNBA announced in a statement.

“We also understand that people make mistakes, and that education and training are as important as imposing discipline. Accordingly, each player will be required to attend individual counseling sessions with a counselor satisfactory to the WNBA,” said Laurel J. Richie, WNBA president, in a statement.

Griner confirmed that she had filed for annulment in a statement to Kate Fagan of espnW.

“Last Wednesday, Glory & I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment,” Griner said. “In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”

The same day the annulment was filed, Johnson posted a photo on Instagram of Griner smiling and leaning on her pregnant stomach.

The day before, the couple announced the pregnancy with a photo on Instagram.
