Watermark’s 2015 Orlando Fringe Reviews: Dragness of God and the Naked Holy Ghost

I have a confession to make, I have never seen Agnes of God, the 1985 Oscar nominated film, for which Michael Wanzie’s “Dragness of God and the Naked Holy Angel” is parodied.

However, if the movie – starring Jane Fonda, Meg Tilly and Anne Bancroft- is anything close to the play, then I am running right out and buying that damn film!

The play takes a look at family relationships, partnerships and faith, then cuts its head off and throws it in the waist paper basket right along with… well, a baebey.

Tommy Wooten plays Dr. Martha Livingston, a psychologist and former Catholic. Livingston is investigating a horrific murder of a newborn baby, or baebey as the good doctor says it at a convent run my Mother Miriam Ruth (played by Michael Wanzie).

The baby’s murder is done by none other than its own mother, Sister Agnes (played by Doug Ba’aser).

Who is the father? That is one of the questions Dr. Livingston is there to answer, but she (and the audience) is pretty sure it is the beautiful, male angel walking around the convent, oh did I mention he is wearing angel wings… and ONLY angel wings.

Dan Huffy makes his Fringe show debut as the Holy Ghost and HOLY MOLY does he give it all he’s got on that stage. He exposes everything he has to the audience giving a performance that steals the spotlight.

“Dragness of God” has more twists and surprises than a Jerry Springer episode, but I can not tell you any more than that. For one, I do not want to give away too much of the show. Secondly, my mother reads my reviews and I would not dare mention anymore for the safety of her fragile heart.

The show is not for those with a weak constitution. It is blasphemous, it is crude, it is vulgar and you are gonna love it! Wanzie is a master of camp and parody and this is him at the top of his game.

“Dragness of God and the Naked Holy Angel” is playing at the Orange Venue at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre.
