ABC picks up Dan Savage sitcom, upsets conservative groups

Dan Savage, LGBT activist and sex columnist, has a new sitcom coming to ABC this fall but not everyone is ready to set their DVRs.

The Real O’Neals is a family comedy, produced by Savage, that centers around an Irish Catholic family who all seem to have secrets, including their 14-year-old son, Kenny, who’s gay.

Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group, has called for ABC to pull the show, launching an online petition on Change.org, because they believe the show to be anti-Christian.

The page currently has over 10,000 signatures.

“We need you to familiarize yourselves with one of the cruelest, most vile political activists in America,” the petition reads. “Dan Savage is a hateful anti-Christian bigot.”

ABC describes the show as “a fresh take on a seemingly perfect Catholic family whose lives take an unexpected turn when surprising truths are revealed. Instead of ruining their family, the honesty triggers a new, messier chapter where everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real.”

ABC has a history of shows that feature prominent, gay characters including Modern Family, How to Get Away with Murder and Ugly Betty.

The Real O’Neals stars Martha Plimpton as Eileen, Jay R. Ferguson as Pat, Noah Galvin as Kenny, Matthew Shively as Jimmy, Bebe Wood as Shannon and Mary Hollis Inboden as Jodi.
