West Lafayette council responds to religious objections law

West Lafayette, Ind. (AP) – West Lafayette’s city council has passed a resolution reiterating the city’s commitment to diversity in light of Indiana’s new religious objections law.

The council voted unanimously April 6  night for the resolution reaffirming the city’s commitment to its human relations ordinances in response to the law, which raised concerns that it could lead to discrimination against gays and lesbians. Lawmakers tweaked the law last week in response to those concerns.

Councilor Steve Dietrich says he sponsored the resolution because diversity in the city that’s home to Purdue University makes it stronger.

Evansville’s city council is expected to take up its own resolution next week in response to Indiana’s law.

Councilwoman Missy Mosby is still drafting its language. She says she has “huge concerns” about what the law could mean for Evansville.
