Three-day waiting period could be waived for Hillsborough same-sex couples

Clerk’s offices prepare for an influx of same-sex couples whom plan on marrying Jan. 6, the first day they can legally be issued marriage licenses. Hillsborough County’s Clerk of Court Pat Frank is making sure there is nothing standing in the way of couples who want to get married on that very first day.

According to WFLA News Channel 8, Clerk Frank is ready to waive the state-mandated three-day waiting period requirement, without couples having to take a pre-marital course.

“I would consider the fact that they’ve been deprived of this right for so many years, a hardship, and there is an ability to waive that requirement under the hardship specification and I plan on doing that if individuals want that done,” she told News Channel 8.

WSVN 7 News reported that the Broward County Courthouse is waiving the waiting period also on Jan. 6 as long as paperwork has been filled out ahead of time, allowing couples to be married as soon as midnight.

Most other counties are advising couples to complete the pre-martial course, which waives the three-day waiting period, prior to coming to the Clerk’s offices if they wish to be married as soon as possible.
