Publix expands benefits to married same-sex couples

Publix will expand benefits to same-sex couples starting Jan.1, 2015.

According to Equality Florida, the benefits will be available to legally married couples, regardless of where they tied the knot.

Here’s an excerpt from Publix’s internal communication on the changes:

“Publix is expanding spouse coverage for its health, dental and vision benefits plans to associates who are married in any state where same-sex marriages are legal, regardless of the associates’ state of residence. Publix’s benefits plans offer coverage to legal spouses, and until recently, the states in which Publix operates did not recognize same-sex marriages as legal unions.”

The supermarket company has 756 locations in Florida and they employ more than 168,500 people.
