Tampa agrees to foot $35K of Tampa Pride’s inaugural bill

Tampa – The City of Tampa took a huge step in embracing the re-imagined Tampa Pride today by finding $35,000 in sponsorship dollars for the March event.

Tampa pride, scheduled for the last weekend in March, had requested $38,000 from the city earlier this month. This is the first major new sponsorship the City of Tampa has done since a moratorium was placed on new events during the recession in 2009.

“Mayor Buckhorn has long been a supporter of LGBT issues and he sees the new Pride celebration as a very positive thing for the city,” Ali Grissom, Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s spokesperson said Monday. “So if there was any way we could help support it we were going to make it work.”

Tampa Pride was told it needed to raise nearly $70,000 to hold a parade and street festival the weekend of March 28. Donations and sponsorships are being accepted through TampaPride.org.

More details on the new agreement coming soon.
