Atlantic Beach unanimously passes HRO

Atlantic Beach – The Atlantic Beach City Commission voted 4-0 to enact a Human Rights Ordinance, which would ban discrimination against LGBT individuals.

At the Aug. 11 meeting, the commissioners voted to unanimously pass the measure. Commissioner Jimmy Hill was absent. The HRO covers equal treatment and protections when it comes to LGBTs applying for jobs, homes, loans and other public accommodations.

About 100 people spoke at the meeting about the agenda item, which resulted in almost two hours of public comment. More spoke in favor than in opposition.

Commissioner Hill sent a note asking to postpone the vote until he could attend the City Commission meeting, but the Commission decided to move forward with final voting on the HRO.

Opposition argued the HRO would allow for lawsuits against local businesses. The ordinance’s exemptions include religious organizations, businesses with 15 or fewer employees and landlords with four or fewer rooms or homes for rent.
