Northern Ireland bakery refuses to make Bert and Ernie gay marriage cake

Ashers Baking Company, which refused to make a gay-themed cake featuring Sesame Street couple Bert and Ernie, might face legal action over its decision to not bake the cake.

The Northern Ireland bakery is run by very Chrisitan business owners, who published a statement on their website in defense of their decision. They said the slogan above the puppets was in support of gay marriage.

Daniel McArthur, the firm’s general manager, said in a statement: “The directors and myself looked at it and considered it and thought that this order was at odds with our beliefs. It certainly was at odds with what the Bible teaches, and on the following Monday we rang the customer to let him know that we couldn’t take his order.”

Nnorthern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom where same-sex marriage is no legal yet. There is a possible challenge later in the year, but still a possiblty of the case having to go all the way to the European court of human rights.

Even Andrew Muir, Northern Ireland’s first openly gay mayor, is in support of taking legal action against the bakery, saying busiensses should not be able to just choose who they will or will not serve.
