Appeal deadline approaches in fight over anti-gay study

Daytona Beach – LGBT blogger John Becker is expected to file a new appeal in his ongoing fight to obtain records from the University of Central Florida about a controversial study on gay parenting.

A clerk with the Fifth District Court of Appeals said May 20 the notice of a new case had been created in Becker v. UCF, though no documents had been filed.

The study, which was conducted by Texas professor Mark Regnerus and appeared in the Social Science Research journal, has been widely discredited. Becker made a public records request for emails and documents related to the study, which is edited and published at UCF.

The school was ordered to give Becker records by one Orlando judge, and it shared some information, but later filed an appeal.

In late April, a second Orlando judge held a hearing and determined UCF was not required to turn over the information. Becker had until May 28 to let the 5th DCA know of his plan to appeal.
