Sarasota-Manatee holds first alternative prom for LGBT youth

Sarasota – With prom season right around the corner, ALSO Youth plans to hold Sarasota’s first alternative prom for LGBT youth and allies.

High school students from 14 to 20 are invited to attend the “A Summer Night”-themed prom on Saturday, May 10, at The Out-of-Door Academy. There is an attendance cap at 200 people, and the dress requirement is semi-formal.

Founded in 1992, ALSO Youth is a nonprofit organization providing support, activities, programs and workshops to southwest Florida’s LGBT youth.

“The Alternative Prom is for every teenager who, for whatever reason, might not be excited about attending his or her own high school prom or dance,” said Donna Hanley, Executive Director of ALSO Youth. “With ‘A Summer Night,’ ALSO’s goal is to provide a model of inclusion and acceptance for youth events, so that one day, all youth will feel comfortable being themselves among their peers, no matter their real or perceived differences.”

DJ Johnny Speed will spin the best dance music all night long, with refreshments from Tropicana and light bites from Blue Rooster. There will also be a photo booth to allow attendees to take complimentary souvenir photos.

A school- or government-issued photo ID and a ticket are required for entrance into the prom. Tickets are available online at AlsoYouth.org and at Tickets.ManateePlayers.com.
