UCF Student Senate to decide fate of Pride Coalition

UCF’s OUTreach Advocacy Board of LGBTQ Services is applying to become an SGA agency called the Pride Coalition and they go before the Student Senate for a final time Nov. 29.

According to OUTreach, SGA agency status would provide the resources necessary to reach and support many more LGBTQ+ students on UCF’s campus.

On Nov. 8, the measure went before the Senate for a second reading and was voted down 15-18. At that meeting, Nicholas Simons, student director of the Pride Coalition, testified that the paid staff and volunteers they currently have are insufficient to meet their needs. He said funding limitations restrict their programming and visibility and without that visibility, students will not feel that they are in an inclusive environment.

The Nov. 29 meeting would be the final vote.

OUTreach representatives are asking supporters to attend the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the UCF Student Union Room 218, and to wear read to show unity. The Senate will likely visit the Pride Coalition issue between 8 and 9 p.m.
