Candidates supported by EQFL fare well in elections

The votes have been counted from the Nov. 3 elections and most of the candidates endorsed by Equality Florida’s Political Action Committee won their respective seats. Stratton Pollitzer, EQFL deputy director, said the PAC is made up of representatives from major cities across the state and they screen the candidates every election cycle.

“We don’t endorse in every race; we only endorse champions,” Pollitzer said. “When someone sees an EQFL PAC endorsement, they can be certain this [candidate] is someone who is strong on the full range of issues that our community fights for.”

The endorsement is based on three criteria: a commitment to electing more LGBT politicians to office, a candidate’s stance on LGBT issues and whether the candidate is running a strong campaign.

Candidates endorsed won in St. Petersburg and Miami Beach. Two openly gay candidates in Miami Beach, however, were defeated on Nov. 3.

“We only endorse in races where we think their gift can make a difference, and the candidate has to reach a certain threshold of viability to receive our endorsement,” said Pollitzer.
