LGBTQ couples shake up gender norms in wedding industry

Traditional weddings are deeply rooted in gender-based rituals, but the growing LGBTQ wedding industry is reimagining that. Many couples are engaging with centuries of tradition but crafting their own way to the altar.

“Structurally, what is required in the wedding planning process is the same,” says Kathryn Hamm, an education and diversity specialist at WeddingWire.com, “but because traditionally speaking, the gender roles in weddings are so deeply engrained, there is a very concrete necessity for two grooms or two brides to figure out how to plan within that schema.”

Judge rejects couple’s argument for refusing LGBTQ customers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – A federal judge has dismissed a legal challenge by the owners of a Minnesota video company who want to shoot weddings for heterosexual couples only.

Carl and Angel Larsen own Telescope Media Group and filed a lawsuit in December against the state’s human rights commissioner and attorney general contesting a Minnesota law that bans businesses from denying wedding services to same-sex couples. The St. Cloud couple’s lawsuit was a pre-emptive effort to avoid penalties for turning away same-sex customers.

Second Oregon judge stops performing weddings because of same-sex marriage

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A second Oregon judge says he is no longer performing weddings after a federal judge overturned the state’s ban on same-sex marriage last year.

The Oregonian reports that Washington County Judge Thomas Kohl says he stopped performing weddings as a judge last summer for faith-based reasons.

Parliament House looks to renovate, develop after bankruptcy

Orlando – Parliament House is officially unburdened by bankruptcy and looking ahead to an expansion, a big new partnership and its 40th anniversary.

According to attorney Scott Shuker, Parliament House filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy July 25 of 2014 and emerged in early March 2015.
