Vigil gathers at Lake Eola to remember transgender teen

About two dozen people attended a candlelight vigil Jan. 2 in memory of Leelah Alcorn, whose death has sparked a national conversation about suicide and support for transgender teenagers.

Seventeen-year-old Leelah Alcorn of Cincinnati, Ohio died on Dec. 28 after she was hit by a tractor trailer. She posted a suicide note online detailing her coming out and struggle with gender identity.

Nearly 50 honor the memory of Leelah Alcorn in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg – Gibbs High School teens Gaylen Granby and Britney Waggott never knew Leelah Alcorn. But the suicide of the Ohio transgender teenager in December motivated the students to celebrate her life and try to help change the way transgender people are viewed by society.

They organized a candlelight vigil at Vinoy Park along St. Petersburg’s waterfront on Jan. 4 and nearly 50 people attended.

2014 World AIDS Day at Lake Eola

An event for World AIDS Day 2014 was held in Downtown Orlando at Lake Eola on Dec. 1. There was free HIV testing, entertainment and remembrance of those infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

The event was put on by Central Florida AIDS Planning Consortium, Miracle of Love, Place of Comfort, The Center and Hope & Help Center.

2014 World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil in St. Pete

On Dec. 1, about 100 prominent St. Petersburg residents and volunteers gathered at the LGBT Welcome Center on Central Avenue for a candlelight vigil and reception commemorating the 25th Anniversary of World AIDS Day.

The vigil was the final event in an art installation which created a mile and a half long virtual red ribbon on Central Avenue by wrapping 173 trees in red cloth. The installation featured an opportunity for visitors to write messages of remembrance and inspiration for those touched by the epidemic.
