Eric Holder to receive 2017 ‘Spirit of Justice’ award

BOSTON (AP) – Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. has been named the recipient of the 2017 Spirit of Justice Award for his work on LGBTQ rights.

The award from Boston-based GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders recognizes Holder’s leadership on a range of civil rights issues, including voting rights, criminal justice reform, examining racial bias in policing, marriage equality and transgender rights.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch says anti-LGBT law violates civil rights

Fayetteville, N.C. (AP) – Civil rights laws exist for anyone victimized because of a physical characteristic they can’t control, and that’s why the U.S. Justice Department challenged a North Carolina law that blocks some legal protections for LGBT citizens, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said May 24.

Lynch’s comments came in response to criticism hours earlier by conservative black pastors and civil rights leaders. They blasted the attorney general for comparing House Bill 2 to Jim Crow laws that segregated blacks to inferior education and opportunities for nearly a century.
