Transgender Kansas teacher honored with award

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A transgender teacher in Kansas has been named “National Educator of the Year” by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.

The Wichita Eagle reports that Wichita North High School music teacher Stephanie Byers came out as a transgender woman in 2014. Byers says she didn’t transition to be a pioneer or an advocate, but that she’s become both.

Man gets maximum prison term for murder of transgender woman near Cornell campus

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — A 47-year-old Ithaca man has received the maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for killing a woman whose body was found at a construction site near Cornell University.

Michael Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February. He admitted he killed 28-year-old Josie Berrios in June. He was sentenced Friday in Tompkins County Court.

Illinois governor candidate stands by ad blasted as transphobic

CHICAGO (AP) — A Republican lawmaker trying to unseat Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is standing by a campaign ad that has been blasted as racist and homophobic, despite the state party chairman’s call for her to stop airing it and apologize.

State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a social and fiscal conservative, said the ad that began airing this weekend illustrates the GOP governor’s “chosen constituents based on the policy choices he made” and primary voters need to know about his record.

Peppermint makes history as first trans woman to create a principal role on Broadway

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season nine alum Peppermint has been cast in the new musical “Head Over Heels,” making her the first openly transgender woman to originate a principal role on Broadway.

“Head Over Heels” is based on the Elizabethan comedy “The Arcadia,” and will feature music from the all-female band The Go-Go’s known for their hits “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “Vacation.”

Trans women struggle to survive in El Salvador city

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Andrea, a transgender woman who lives in San Luis Talpa, a small city that is near El Salvador’s main international airport, was walking to her mother’s home on Aug. 29 when a man stopped his motorbike and began to yell at her.

Andrea was talking with her friend on her cell phone when the man confronted her. Three cars stopped on the highway on which she was walking a few minutes later and men with guns stepped out.

Transgender woman sexually assaulted at historic Stonewall Inn

New York (AP) – New York City police are searching for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a transgender woman in a bathroom at the historic Stonewall Inn bar in Greenwich Village.

Police said March 28 the victim was in the unisex bathroom when the unknown man enters and apparently sexually assaults her. Police say the suspect flees the bathroom, but then returns a short time later and assaults her a second time before leaving.

Support center bridges gap between LGBT and law enforcement in underserved Midwest

Kansas City, Mo. (AP) – A quiet office in a busy entertainment district is a rare space for LGBTQ people to find help in times of crisis or to meet others for support and friendship.

The Kansas City Anti-Violence Project’s new domestic violence and sexual assault services center also is the only such center in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, filling a gap for a population of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people who often struggle to find help in domestic violence situations. Other services – such as food, clothing, job counseling and legal and medical advocacy – are available, too, according to executive director Justin Shaw.
