RENT was a more than a Broadway musical, it was a movement. Twenty years after Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking show won the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it is back and its themes of life, death and love are still as relevant today as the day it opened on Broadway.

‘Rent’ announced as Fox’s next live musical

Fox’s next live production event will be the Tony-winning musical, “Rent,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The rock musical, loosely based on the Italian opera “La bohème” by Giacomo Puccini, will be adapted for the small screen by executive producer Marc Platt (“La La Land,” “Wicked”) and the estate of the late “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson.

NBC releases a first look at the network’s next live musical “Hairspray”

After the success of The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz; NBC continues its ratings juggernaut of live musicals with Hairspray Live!, airing on the peacock network Dec. 7 at 8:00 ET.

The live television event, based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical (which in turn is based on the 1988 John Waters film), tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a “pleasantly plump” teenager (played by newcomer Maddie Baillio), landing a spot on a TV dance show in her hometown of Baltimore.

NEW YORK (AP) – Some of Broadway’s biggest musical hits are on the road this season, like Matilda, The Book of Mormon and Jersey Boys. Then there’s one show that few initially thought would thrive off-Broadway much less go on a national tour.

Fun Home, the 2015 Tony-winning best musical, has begun its America journey as the first Broadway show with a lesbian protagonist, one who is dealing with a parent’s suicide and her own sexuality. It’s also joyous, loving and poignant enough to bring red and blue staters alike to tears.

Playwright Edward Albee dies at age 88

NEW YORK (AP) – Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee, who challenged theatrical convention in masterworks such as “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “A Delicate Balance,” died Sept. 16, his personal assistant said. He was 88.

He died at his home in Montauk, east of New York, assistant Jackob Holder said. No cause of death was immediately given, although he had suffered from diabetes. With the deaths of Arthur Miller and August Wilson in 2005, he was arguably America’s greatest living playwright.

Priscilla, Queen of the Cruise: Award-winning costume designer Tim Chappel takes drag fashion on the high seas

The queens are trading in the mighty tour bus in the Australian Outback for a cruise ship on the Atlantic as the musical sensation Priscilla, Queen of the Desert opens on board the Norwegian Epic cruise ship leaving out of Southampton, England, Oct. 19 for a final destination in Barcelona.

The musical, which is based on the 1994 Oscar-winning film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, played on Broadway in 2011 and 2012 and won a Tony award for the same thing it won the Oscar for: those fabulous costumes.

The 12th Orlando Cabaret Festival returns to Mad Cow

Orlando – The Mad Cow Theater’s 12th annual Orlando Cabaret Festival is set to debut on April 24, and this year it’s bringing in some pretty big names. Tony Award-winner Laura Benanti, Tony Award-nominee Christiane Noll, and former One Life to Live star Nicholas Rodriguez are headlining the 18-day festival, which will also showcase Central Florida’s local talent through May 11.

While several Tony Award nominees have performed in previous years, Benanti, who won the 2008 Tony Award for her role as Louise in a revival of the musical Gypsy, will be the first Tony Award winner to perform at the festival.
