Harrisburg, Pa.-  The federal judge who struck down Pennsylvania’s law banning the recognition of same-sex marriage said June 9 that he saw no proof it undermines the institution of marriage or weakens families.

U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III, responding to criticism of his decision, noted that Gov. Tom Corbett’s administration did not even try to establish such a link in the case before him. He suggested that such a link is not persuading any other judge, either.

HELENA, Montana (AP) – Four gay couples are suing the northwestern state of Montana over its constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, making its neighbors North Dakota and South Dakota the only two states with similar bans and no lawsuits seeking to overturn them.

The Dakotas might not hold that distinction for long: a lesbian couple in South Dakota said they also plan to challenge their state’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the coming days, along with a provision in federal law that lets states avoid recognizing gay marriages performed elsewhere. Their attorney said he’s contemplating filing a lawsuit in North Dakota, too.

PHILADELPHIA—Pennsylvania’s ban on gay marriage was overturned by a federal judge in a decision that makes same-sex marriage legal throughout the Northeast.

Pennsylvania was the last remaining state to outlaw gay marriage in the Northeast, a region that tends to be socially liberal and Democratic. An appeal to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is likely. If the decision stands, Pennsylvania would become the 19th state to legalize gay marriage.
