Kenyan author, LGBTQ activist Binyavanga Wainaina dies at 48

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) | One of Africa’s best-known authors and gay rights activists, Binyavanga Wainaina, has died at age 48, a colleague and friend said May 22.

The Kenyan author died May 21 in Nairobi after an illness, Tom Maliti, the chairman of the Kwani Trust which Wainaina founded, told The Associated Press.

Florida House candidate Anna Eskamani makes TIME magazine cover

Anna Eskamani, who is running for Florida House District 47, is featured on the cover of the latest issue of TIME magazine in a collage of 48 women who are running for, or have been elected to, a U.S. political office.

The cover story titled “The Avengers: First They Marched, Now They’re Running,” takes a look at the record number of women running for political office in the U.S. since the 2016 election of President Donald Trump.

Edith Windsor is runner-up for Time Person of the Year

Edith Windsor, the gay rights activist whose Supreme Court case led to the downfall of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), is a runner-up for Time’s Person of the Year 2013.

Time magazine selected Pope Francis as its Person of the Year Dec. 11, saying the Catholic Church’s new leader has changed the perception of the 2,000-year-old institution in an extraordinary way in a short time.
