Couples look back 5 years after same-sex marriage ban lifted

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) | Many Utah couples are celebrating their fifth anniversary this month and looking back on their rush to wed after a federal judge had become the first in the country to strike down a state ban on gay marriage.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that Utah’s laws against same-sex marriage were unconstitutional on Dec. 20, 2013, leading to more than 1,200 couples dashing to county clerks’ offices to become legally married during the 17-day window after the ruling.

1st drag show at Utah State University draws large crowd

LOGAN, Utah (AP) | The first-ever drag show at traditionally conservative Utah State University drew a large and supportive crowd to cheer on 10 drag performers in an event that organizers said marks progress on LGBTQ issues.

Last week’s show was held as part of a discussion about drag culture and the LGBTQ community. Performers not only danced and sang but also answered questions about what taking part in the show meant to them, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Utah LGBTQ advocates seeks ban on conversion therapy

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) | Utah LGBTQ advocates say they will join a nationwide effort to get the state to ban a practice known as “conversion therapy.”

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Equality Utah Executive Director Troy Williams said advocates are ready to push for legislation that would make it illegal for the practice to be administered in the state.
