2017 LGBTQ Pop Culture Alphabet

It was the year of #MeToo, as this one story seemed to dominate the pop culture landscape of 2017. Victims came out saying “enough is enough” and called out their attackers and predators by name.

It was also a year of important stories being told on television and in films. We honored the voices of women, people of color and the LGBTQ community in movies like Moonlight and The Life and Death of Marsha P. Johnson, and on shows like When We Rise and Master of None. Plus we got Will & Grace back!

ABC cancels ‘The Real O’Neals’

ABC has canceled “The Real O’Neals” after a two-season run.

“The Real O’Neals” followed the seemingly perfect O’Neal family as they handle the aftermath of revealing their secrets. Middle child Kenny (Noah Galvin) comes out as gay, oldest brother Jimmy (Matthew Shively) is anorexic, younger sister Shannon (Bebe Wood) thinks she might be an atheist and parents Eileen (Martha Plimpton) and Pat (Jay R. Ferguson) are getting divorced.

ABC picks up Dan Savage sitcom, upsets conservative groups

Dan Savage, LGBT activist and sex columnist, has a new sitcom coming to ABC this fall but not everyone is ready to set their DVRs.

The Real O’Neals is a family comedy, produced by Savage, that centers around an Irish Catholic family who all seem to have secrets, including their 14-year-old son, Kenny, who’s gay.
