Lee Daniels pushes through fear with shows ‘Empire,’ ‘Star’

ATLANTA (AP) – Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels says he’s consumed by fear each time he films a new scene.

Even after Daniels found meteoric success through films such as “Monster’s Ball,” ”Precious” and “The Butler,” along with his popular TV series “Empire,” he still worries that his work won’t live up to people’s lofty expectations.

Fox’s ‘Empire’ plans to ‘blow lid off homophobia’

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) – The creator of Fox’s prime-time soap “Empire” said he wants to “blow the lid off homophobia” in the African-American community with a depiction of the show’s lead character’s hostile relationship with his gay son.

Lee Daniels, who was also behind the movies “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Precious,” said that his own father’s hostility toward gays frightened him and he knows the same attitudes are being passed on from one generation to another in households around the world.

Screened Out: Prisoners

Hugh Jackman, Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Melissa Leo

On average, audiences pay nine bucks just for a ticket to a flick. No matter how good some aspects are, I cannot imagine the average moviegoer being overjoyed with something this long, this labyrinthine, this tortured.

I also cannot, in good conscience, call Prisoners a bad film – just a painful, troubling one, with some small flaws.
