Gay-run super PAC seeks to help Dems win back state legislatures

A newly launched super PAC is seeking to make gains for Democrats in state legislatures, and the operation is run by an openly gay former Barack Obama campaign official who helped propel him to victory in 2008.

Forward Majority, which launched in September, has deployed $1 million to win seats next month in the Virginia election with the bold ambition of Democrats taking control of the General Assembly. Those efforts will be used as a prototype for state legislative wins in the midterm and 2020 elections, which will be key at that time because congressional redistricting will be underway and state legislatures have a significant voice in that process.

Republican Super PAC plans $8M in ads to keep North Carolina Legislature anti-LGBT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A super PAC with ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced plans Sept. 1 to spend $8.1 million on television ads in the North Carolina Senate race, where Republican incumbent Richard Burr is facing a spirited Democratic challenge.

With a goal of keeping the chamber in GOP hands, the Senate Leadership Fund said it is reserving ad time starting Sept. 13 in nearly all of the state’s TV markets and will air the ads regularly into late October. One Nation, a nonprofit arm of the fund, announced last month that it would air $2.5 million in ads praising Burr for what it called his efforts to preserve Medicare.
