St. Petersburg celebrates sixteen years of Pride

St. Pete Pride drew 220,000 people to St. Petersburg for its weekend-long celebration last year, around 40,000 short of the Sunshine City’s entire population.

As any event of its size would, particularly one so intrinsically tied to the community it serves, the organization’s 15th year faced its fair share of cheers and jeers. For the first time in its history, the St. Pete Pride parade was held in downtown St. Petersburg rather than in the city’s Grand Central District.

Proud Mary’s wheels are turnin’

After a summer of teasing from Mary letting the St. Pete area know that a new Hamburger Mary’s would be moving into the neighborhood, it finally happened. Hamburger Mary’s—or as this location is known, Sunshine City Mary’s—is opened for business. If the first few weeks are any indication, that business won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

The doors opened Aug. 25 and the guests started coming; including a “welcome to the neighborhood” greeting from Punky’s Brian Longstreth. Sunshine City Mary’s is located across from Tyrone Square Mall in the old Hooters building. Anyone who has been to any of the Hamburger Mary’s locations across the country, or one of the other two Bay Area locations, knows that a trip to Mary’s isn’t just about the food (don’t get us wrong, the food is reason enough to go), it’s the show that goes with it.

The New ‘It’ Gay Destination: St. Pete Set to Host Global LGBT Travel Convention

St. Petersburg will be the first on Florida’s Gulf Coast to host the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association’s Annual Global Convention. Sunshine City will doubly welcome LGBT travelers and the LGBT travel industry as a whole when travel professionals convene at the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort and Golf Club on May 3-6, 2017.

“In recent years, this event has been held in Brazil, Madrid, Los Angeles—and this coming year to Cape Town, South Africa. Now St. Petersburg joins the list,” St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman said in a statement to Watermark. “We are honored and look forward to sharing with the LGBT travel community the many diverse offerings we have to offer.”
