Stonewall 50 finally gets our history right

Something very strange happened during last June’s celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The LGBT community, especially those of us from Gay Liberation Front New York realized how the history we created from 1969 to 1971 was being distorted by those who had recorded it.

Even LGBT organizations, whose mission is to give resources and information to mainstream media, fell short and had to be corrected by the mainstream media it was supposed to assist. On an anniversary of this scope, communities begin to both look back at their history and think critically about where they are at present.

Pride celebrations in Europe mark 50 years since Stonewall

MADRID (AP) | European cities celebrated LGBTQ pride on Saturday with colorful parades that also became platforms for political demands and a push back against far-right populist parties.

This year’s events in London, Madrid and Budapest mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising in New York against police persecution, a turning point in the modern gay rights movement.

PHOTOS: WorldPride 2019 commemorates 50th anniversary of Stonewall

Millions lined the streets of Manhattan June 30 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and celebrate WorldPride.

Organizers said that 150,000 people marched during the parade, which kicked off at noon at 26th St. and Fifth Ave. in the Chelsea neighborhood. The Gay Liberation Front, the cast of FX’s hit series “Pose,” UK Black Pride co-founder Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, The Trevor Project and Monica Helms, the transgender activist who created the trans Pride flag, served as grand marshals.

Madonna closes out WorldPride with nod to Stonewall anniversary

Madonna capped off the massive WorldPride celebration in New York City with a concert on Pier 97 for the Pride Island concert on Sunday.

She acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which ignited the gay liberation movement, in between her set.

Upwards of four million people lined the streets of Manhattan on Sunday for the WorldPride parade.

The parade began at noon at 26th Street and Fifth Avenue in the Chelsea neighborhood.

Obama honors Stonewall’s 50th

Former President Barack Obama, LGBTQ ally and the nation’s 44th commander in chief, marked the 50th anniversary of Stonewall June 28.

“50 years ago, history was written at the Stonewall Inn when New York City’s LGBT community stood up, spoke out, and started a movement,” Obama shared.
