Speaker Ryan becomes latest Republican to announce retirement

With Republicans fretting about losing control of Congress in the mid-term elections, U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has announced he won’t seek re-election, leaving an uneven record on LGBTQ rights and the door open for another Republican to take his place as leader of his caucus.

The 10-term member of Congress, who has served as speaker since 2015, announced during a news conference Wednesday he wouldn’t seek re-election to represent Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district in order to spend more time with his family, confirming news reports about his intended plan earlier in the day.

Janet Mock says Caitlyn Jenner doesn’t represent transgender community

Janet Mock shared that she doesn’t consider Caitlyn Jenner the spokesperson for the transgender community while appearing on Chelsea Handler’s Netflix talk show, “Chelsea.”

Handler asked Mock if she felt the need to defend Jenner for her controversial joke that “liberals can’t shoot straight” in reference to James Hodgkinson shooting at a GOP baseball practice that left Rep. Steve Scalise hospitalized in critical condition.

Lesbian officer wounded in Va. shooting, visited by Trump in hospital

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner — a lesbian in a same-sex marriage — was among those wounded during a shooting this week in the Virginia suburbs and received a visit from President Trump during his trip to the hospital to see the victims.

Griner was among the five people shooter James T. Hodgkinson wounded on Wednesday during an incident at the Republican congressional baseball practice. On the House floor, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) praised her as one of the officers who saved lives during the shooting where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was badly wounded.
