It was the year of #MeToo, as this one story seemed to dominate the pop culture landscape of 2017. Victims came out saying “enough is enough” and called out their attackers and predators by name.

It was also a year of important stories being told on television and in films. We honored the voices of women, people of color and the LGBTQ community in movies like Moonlight and The Life and Death of Marsha P. Johnson, and on shows like When We Rise and Master of None. Plus we got Will & Grace back!

New ‘Star Trek’ series to feature gay character, female lead

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) – The start of production on the new “Star Trek” TV series is a month away and the debut date isn’t until next January, but the effort to build fan interest is already in motion – if not at warp speed.

Following up a Comic-Con panel in July about “Star Trek: Discovery,” executive producer Bryan Fuller shared details about the 13-episode series’ setting, characters and innovations at a Television Critics Association meeting Aug. 10.

‘Star Trek’ creator’s son unsure of gay Sulu

Los Angeles (AP) – The son of late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry says his father would have been on board with an Enterprise crew member being portrayed as gay, but he’s unsure if it should have been helmsman Hikaru Sulu.

Rod Roddenberry said his father would have been supportive of a gay “Trek” character and commended the Star Trek Beyond filmmakers for featuring an LGBT character. Roddenberry died in 1991.

George Takei thinks it ‘unfortunate’ that his Star Trek character is now gay

Star Trek’s first Mr. Sulu, George Takei, is not happy that the character he originated will be gay in the latest film of the successful science fiction series.

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character,” Takei tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene [Roddenberry]’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

Mr. Sulu in the new ‘Star Trek’ film revealed to be gay

The latest sequel to J.J. Abram’s Star Trek reboot is set to hit theaters at the end of this month, and as the cast members are making there rounds on the talk show circuit, plot points are being revealed, namely that Mr. Sulu is gay.

John Cho, who plays the U.S.S. Enterprise’s pilot Mr. Sulu, visited Sydney to promote Star Trek Beyond along with fellow cast mates Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) and director Justin Lin.

Star Trek Actor Takei honored for California LGBT Pride Month

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Former “Star Trek” actor George Takei is being recognized by the California Legislature as part of its celebration of LGBT Pride Month.

He was among several people honored June 23 in the Assembly and Senate.
