Vice President Mike Pence, who’s notorious for his anti-LGBT record, responded Jan. 17 to criticism over his wife Second Lady Karen Pence teaching at a school that excludes LGBT teachers and students, calling criticism of the Christian institution “deeply offensive.”

Pence made the remarks during an interview with EWTN Global Catholic Network in response to reporter Lauren Ashburn’s inquiry over the criticism.

Karen Pence accepts teaching job at school that bans LGBT students, families

Second Lady Karen Pence has accepted a position as an art teacher at the Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Va., which does not allow LGBT students or families to enroll and will not offer employment to LGBT applicants.

The school’s guidelines are listed in its “parent agreement” which states Immanuel Christian School “can refuse admission to an applicant or to discontinue enrollment if the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home, the activities of a parent or guardian, or the activities of the student are counter to, or are in opposition to, the biblical lifestyle the school teaches.”

Transgender woman says man she met on app attacked her

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) | A transgender woman from Springfield says she has no idea why a man she met on a dating app attacked her.

Tenia Williams told The Springfield News-Leader on September 11 that she met 24-year-old Dominic James on PlentyofFish on Aug. 18. She said after they met for consensual sex the next day, James suddenly came out of a bathroom and choked her and attacked her with a knife, while asking where she kept her money.

Missouri city voters repeal anti-discrimination law

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – Voters in Missouri’s third largest city of Springfield voted April 7 to repeal an ordinance that provided protection against discrimination in housing and hiring based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Unofficial final results showed that repeal of the ordinance passed with 51.4 percent of the vote.

Illinois veterans join marriage equality effort

Springfield, Ill. (AP) – Illinois military veterans are joining the effort to legalize gay marriage in the state.

A group called “Veterans Unite for Marriage” is pressing the Illinois House to OK same-sex marriage during the legislative session that begins later this month.
